UPVC Conservatory Construction

Constructing a UPVC conservatory can be done in two ways, you either can build it yourself from a kit or hire a professional team to construct one for you. Depending on how skilled you are, a do-it-yourself kit may be more cost-effective. Relying on professional contractors will however eliminate the stress of having to build a UPVC conservatory on your own and is recommended if you have only minimal building experience.

Determine if both your plans to build a conservatory and the actual construction of the UPVC conservatory need to meet local building regulations. It is wise to seek advice from a local council about the specific regulations in your area before actually starting the construction of your conservatory. Otherwise, failure to abide by local regulations can result in penalties, including the dismantling of the structure.

It can take up to 12 weeks to build a UPVC conservatory although most structures can be completed over much shorter periods of time. When purchasing a conservatory you will have a statutory right giving you a 7 day cooling off period from receipt of order and deposit. During this 7 day period, both the customer and the company are entitled to cancel the order, and if that happens, the customer is allowed to claim back the deposit paid. Once the 7 day period has elapsed, there is no further legal right giving the customer more time to back out and the company is obliged to build the UPVC conservatory as agreed.

The next step is for a surveyor to conduct a survey on the property so that a base plan can be drawn up. Included in this plan are the following details:

1. Location of the UPVC conservatory

2. Foundation depths determination in order to build a solid foundation

3. Checking of any drains and down–pipes that will require repositioning or will need to be bridged

4. Coordination with the client regarding the positioning of electric sockets, lights, design and materials to be used

The builder of the structure, whether they are the homeowner or a professional contractor, will then proceed to construct the UPVC conservatory in a systematic fashion.

The Base

The base of your conservatory is one of the most important things to get right, as it will determine how easy construction will be and also how stable and long lasting the conservatory is.

First thing to do is reduction of ground levels. Any hard materials should be removed from the area where the conservatory is to be built. For instance, concrete slabs, patios and any vegetation soil must be completely removed.

Foundation

Next on the agenda is digging the foundation trenches. The dimensions of the trench are normally 450mm wide by 650 – 1000mm deep. They should be concreted using a mass fill as this is quicker and cheaper than other methods. The concrete is normally finished 150mm below ground level.

Damp Proof Course

It is of high importance that you have a proper damp proof course installed in your UPVC conservatory base, as this will prevent problems with damp seeping into the fabric of the main house from your conservatory walls.

Conservatory Base Wall

There are two options for the UPVC conservatory base wall. It can either be a proper cavity brick wall, or can be a prefabricated base such as the Instabuild Conservatory base system, which allows the simple construction of the conservatory base and floor. The Instabuild conservatory base can be obtained with a variety of finishes including brick, stone and rendering to allow it to be matched to the rest of the house.

The next stage is for the electrician to fix the electrics. The surveyor will then return to check his measurements prior to ordering the conservatory in order to get a good fitting. The UPVC conservatory will be delivered approximately 2 weeks from the order date.

The fitters will then arrive and fit the UPVC conservatory. Fitting will take anything between 1 and 12 weeks, although most projects will be towards the lower end of this scale and can be completed in less than a fortnight. If you are building the structure yourself, you will usually need more time than a professional would. The last person to visit is the electrician who will perform a second electrical fix.

The construction of a conservatory requires proper planning and implementation in order to build a long lasting and durable structure.
